Canooing with open Canadians at river Raab

Austria - Hungary, 08 – 14. 08. 2008 by Rotary Club Feldbach,  Rotaract Graz, Interact Club Feldbach

Report by Lisa Kim (Youth Exchange student from Australia)

Canoeing across the Raab River, swimming in the fresh water, making friends from all over the world and sharing these valuable experiences with them… These were some of the aspects that I loved during the six days of the Rotary Summer Camp hosted by Rotary Club Feldbach.

Meeting 19 young people from various parts of the world was most exiting for me. I attended this camp to get to know people from different countries and learn about them and their culture. In Australia, meeting people from Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden and Austria all in one place is rare. So I really treasured the time that I had with them. We found our international language, English, and had no problem communicating with each other. It was quite interesting to know, that many of them had come to the Summer Camp to improve their English.

We canoed around 15-20 km everyday with around 3 breaks in between. Surprisingly, we were not very tired. We were just having too much fun! We were recommended to partner up with different people to canoe everyday. As a result, we got to know each other very well. We enjoyed the nature around us, chatted with one another and sung loudly. Shortly after, we realized that people from other canoes were joining us in our merry medley of songs from Nursery Rhymes, Disney Film songs to pop songs.

On the second night, members of Rotary Club Feldbach drove to Hungary and joined us for a real campfire Goulash. We really enjoyed the company of the Rotarians. We danced Australian bush dances to the music that a Rotarian played with his accordion. We also sang around the campfire as the fire blazed and the sounds of the wood crackling filled up the clear starry night.

The laughs that we shared and the friendships that we made will last forever in our lives. We really appreciate the efforts put in by Moving Waters, the organization who led us during the trip. I am also very grateful for the work done by Rotary Club Feldbach for the financial support and organization of the wonderful camp. Horst Fickel, a Rotarian who was with us throughout the whole camp, dedicated so much of himself before and during the camp. We cannot express how much we thank him for what he did for us. It has been a memorable experience, that we will treasure forever in our lives.
